FAQs

  1. What space do I need to have Fine Art Images (FAI) taken of my horse?

The best place to take FAI is in your barn aisleway, when the sun is slightly behind the barn so that there is shade in front of the aisle. When the sun is directly at the barn door, or coming into the barn we will not be able to shoot. If you’re not at a facility with barn aisle, it’s possible to make a 3-sided structure work (such as a turn-out shed), or a covered arena. Ideally I can set up my black backdrop in your aisle, but if that won’t work we can shoot without it.

  1. How should I prepare my horse?

Clean, clean, clean! It’s a great idea to give your horse a bath the day before (or morning of, it there is time for your horse to fully dry) our session. A touch of hoof polish right before we start shooting is nice as well. If you choose to put oil on your horse’s face, use less than you would for competition. And if you’re going to be in the images, make sure to use clear oil so you don’t get smudges on your clothes.

  2. Should I have my horse braided?

I say absolutely! If it fits your riding discipline I highly encourage braiding. It doesn’t matter if you do hunter, jumper, or dressage style braids - they provide beautiful clean lines that accentuate your horse’s neck. Western banding also looks neat and polished. It’s never a requirement to have your horse braided for FAI, but I know you’ll be very pleased with the results if you do.

  3. Should I work my horse down?

You know your horse best! We want your horse alert enough to elicit beautiful expressions, but not be so wired that s/he can’t stand still. If your horse is not used to being in a stall and you want him in a stall prior to our session to stay clean, PLEASE work your horse that day so he doesn’t have too much pent up energy.

As always, I use the utmost care and respect when getting your horses attention for photos - I never want to push the horse into fear, only interest. If your horse will benefit from lunging before our session please allow the time to do so.

  4. Can I be in the photos?

Yes! I would love to capture you in the images as well.

  5. What do I need to bring?

You will need to be present to hold your horse (or make prior arrangements for your trainer or someone else to do so). Bringing a friend to help with ears is super helpful. If we’re having your horses photographed on the same day, you can each be each other’s helper! A clean halter or bridle for your horse to wear. Also, patience. It can take some time to get your horse to stand in the most flattering way! Don’t stress!

  6. What will you bring?

Thin lead rope, “invisible halter” (if you want your horse to appear to be wearing nothing), holiday wreaths (if applicable), peppermints, and items to get your horse’s attention. If you don’t have someone to help you during your session, I need to know ahead of time so I can arrange for an assistant.

  7. How should I prepare my tack?

You tack should be ever cleaner than your horse! Please pay special attention to your tack. Full clean a few days before, wipe downs until your session. Scrub your bit. Make sure everything shines. Before you session, remove the reins from your bridle (unless it has a gag or shank bit).

  8. What if my horse is hungry or we schedule our session during feeding time?

Please allow your horse to eat prior to our session so your horse is relaxed and not worried about missing out on feeding time!
